The Boston Police have confirmed that their public information website www.bpdnews.com was hacked earlier today. The malicious attack on the website took down the department’s content and replaced it with a music video degrading towards police. At this time the website is still down while the BPD technical staff works to fix the issue. In the mean time the site is redirecting to the department’s Facebook page.
Rouge hacker group “Anonymous” has claimed responsibility for the attack, and stated that it was in response to the BPD’s actions with Occupy Boston. In October Anonymous had attacked the Boston Police Patrolman’s Association revealing internal passwords and email addresses of officers.
Boston Police detectives are investigating the incident and the deaprtment posted the following on their Facebook page:
The Boston Police Department is working diligently to restore the function of BPDNews.com, the department’s public safety blog. It is unfortunate that someone would go to this extent to compromise BPDNews.com, a helpful and informative public safety resource utilized daily by community members seeking up-to-date news and information about important safety matters. Our skillful technical staff is focused on rectifying this issue. Detectives continue their investigation into individuals engaging in this type of disruptive and criminal activity.

The BPDNews.com website is still down at 7:30 am Saturday. There has been no official word on when the site will be restored, however officials are “working on restoring the data and hardening the site”.
