Large Fire Called Arson in Roxbury

At 12:47 am Monday October 17, 2011 Boston Police, Fire, and EMS responded to a report of a large explosion at an apartment complex on Wardman Street in the Roxbury neighborhood of the city. Upon their arrival emergency workers found the wall around one apartment blown out from an apparent explosion, and flames rapidly spreading to other parts of the large building. Fire fighters quickly called in additional help to rescue the occupants of the building, many of whom were sleeping when the fire broke out.

The Boston Fire Department reported that many occupants were rescued by ladders thrown to the building. One crew was credited as saving a baby dropped from the third floor by its parents to escape the smoke. At least 11 occupants and 2 fire fighters were transported to area hospitals for injuries sustained in the blaze. All told, the fire rose to 6 alarms bringing fire crews from across the city to the scene, and crews from neighboring cities in for coverage.

During the fire a man identified by the Boston Police as Mohamed Abdul Jabar checked in at the Boston Medical Center with burns to his arms. Jabar made statements leading the staff at the BMC to believe he had set the Wardman St fire in a failed suicide attempt. The Boston Police responded and took Jabar into custody at the hospital, and plan to charge him with multiple infractions including arson and attempted murder. It does not appear at this time that Jabar lived in the building.

The cause of the fire was traced to a cut gas line to a stove in a first floor apartment. An explosion from the leaking gas sparked the fire that quickly spread throughout the entire building. The building is massive, and is said to have had 30-40 apartments inside.
